Kids Zone
There is sometimes confusion over
what "Kids Zone" means in reference to AYSO.
The Kids Zone program was created in
response to concerns that sometimes youth sports have become
negative--even violent--in the past. It is a gentle reminder that while
competition is important, ultimately AYSO is about the kids.
Kids play sports are to have fun, make
new friends and learn new skills. As coaches, parents and volunteers, we
need to keep sport in its proper perspective and support them.
That means redefining what it is to be a
“Winner.” A Winner is more than just scoring the goal or beating the other
team; a winner is someone who makes maximum effort, continues to learn and
improve, and does not let mistakes, or fear of making mistakes, stop him
or her.
Furthermore, to make the AYSO a positive
experience, it is important that the adults set a good example of
sportsmanship. That means showing respect for all involved in the game
including coaches, players, opponents, opposing fans, and referees.
Part of that is reflected in how we act
as bystanders. We all want our children to do well, and encouraging words
are welcome additions. Negative and embarrassing criticism are not
conducive to a positive experience.
A little bit of common sense and common
courtesy can go a long way toward making the experience better for
everyone involved.
A large sideline
poster which lists positive behavior standards will be posted at
all AYSO events. Parents and spectators who will abide by these standards
are welcome -- all others are not. The Kids Zone sign says:

view The Kids Zone Video called "The
Pledge"“The Pledge” is a 12 minute video in which
AYSO volunteers describe the atmosphere they feel should
prevail at our practices and games. It also features a TV news
story about crowd violence and misbehavior at youth sporting events and
the steps AYSO is taking to combat it. Finally, there is a scenario
where a parent decides to intervene and persuade another adult to change
his behavior..
