Sideline
Etiquette
Soccer is an
enjoyable game to watch as well as to play. Our emphasis is not on who
wins but how the players and teams develop, and most importantly, did they
have fun in doing so? We want all participants to reach their full,
age-appropriate potential and to enjoy themselves in the
process.
Please realize
that the players are trying their best and deserve your very best
in the way of support and encouragement. Negative comments have no
place in AYSO. Cheer for all good effort and attitude – for all
players on both teams!
The area off the
field that the spectators occupy is opposite the “team” side, no closer
than three yards from the touch line, and between the penalty areas.
Under no circumstances is anyone allowed behind the goal lines.
The coach is to
be the sole source of coaching during the match and should offer only
positive instructional or encouraging comments. Play-by-play
instructions during the game thwarts players’ ability to put into effect
their practice lessons. Let them think on their feet!
Remember, only coaches coach and spectators only
cheer!
The head coach
and assistant coach are the only adults allowed in the team area
(across the field from the spectators).
An important
aspect of the AYSO program is Sportsmanship. Our children
need to experience:
o
The fun of hard
fought, but fair, competition
o
Winning and
losing graciously
o
Improving one’s
abilities through practice
o
Learning the
social skills of being a “team player”, including acknowledging
good play by teammates as well as opponents
Our children
learn by watching and imitating our conduct. Keep a
positive outlook and demonstrate good sideline behavior by supporting the
coaches, players, and referees, in spite of any mistakes they may make
during the game.
